I have been looking at my photographs and doing some painting from them, I aim to have a bit of an edit in photoshop to create some repeats.

Florence!
This week I took a trip to Flornce to visit the Pitti Filati yarn fair. The fair was magnificant and a really inspiring when it comes to how carefull you should be when it comes to choice of yarn. I am completely blown away by some of the things I saw at the yarn fair.
As my previous photographs have looked at light and water, I took some photographs during my stay in Florence to include in my work, looking at this as well. I have so many photographs but I will only upload a few as it would be impractical to include them all. I will however present them in a sketchbook.

I am more inspired by the purple/blue colour palette of these photographs and will explore this more than the brown hues of my last set of photographs. I really really like the broken/fuzzy lines that I have seen in these photos and they remind me of some kind of wool, maybe mohair, and this could be use in my weft, combining the use of floats and trapped pieces of the wool against a more solid coloured background.

Dashing Tweeds
I had another look at some of the work previously made by dashing tweeds. I have picked out a couple of the more "blended" checked pieces.
This image in particular stands out to me as the colours are beautifully blended together to create this gradiant of colour. Also the twill-like weave structure reflects the chevrons I have seen previously. I will bear this techniques of blended colour in mind for my weaving.
I like these two samples because although they are checked, they are a bit more tonal and blended. The use of colour and proportion is key to creating something like this.

Paint..
Today I had a play around with some paint to try and capture some of the shapes I had seen when taking my photographs. However I don't think that this was very successful as I couldnt quite see a connection between my drawings and my photographs. I will have a go at editing the scanned in versions on photoshop to see if I can make them relate a bit better, however I am going to have a go at approaching my drawing in a different way.

Drawing
The broken horizontal lines could be played around with during my time in the weave room, perhaps with the use of floats or a blanket warp? I am yet to decide this.

Photoshop
I had a play around with some of my photographs on photoshop to try and create some repeat patterns and shapes that I could translate into some woven samples later on in the project when I have access to the looms.
The chevron-like qualities that some of my photoshop work possesses leads me to think of using a pointed draft for my threading of my warp. The fact that the light and colour is so sharp could suggest the use of silk in my warp, however, I would rather use wool for this brief as it possesses a more "tweed-like" trait. I am thinking of using gradiating colour, or even dip-dyeing a warp, to translate the blending and soft lines of colour that I have found in my photographs.

Urban Landscape
I am not particularly inspired by architecture, so I decided to use a different aspect of my urban landscape for my inspiration.
I have always noticed that Manchester, and this may be true for other urban landscapes, transforms at night into a brightly lit and colourful environment. This is interesting as by day the city can look quite dull and bleak, with many greys and browns colouring the buildings and streets. I decided to reference this particular time of day (or rather night) as my starting point for my visual research.
On this particular evening, I had been unfortunate enough to be caught in one of the infamous Manchester rain spells. I really like the way that the surface of the roads/floors transform at night after being lashed with rain, adding colour and vibrancy to the mundane cobbles or tarmac. The colours are very exciting and although I usually work with a duller colour palette I am excited to embrace the new challenge of working with a more vibrant colour palette.
